Between the new baby, a new job and the unrelenting heat my husband decided he didn’t have the time necessary to maintain his dreads and he was ready to cut his hair. I had actually had the same thought almost at the same time, so it was good that we were on the same page. It was no less bittersweet though. It was about 8 1/2 years ago that armed with a day off and instructions from the internet I painstakingly dreaded my then boyfriend now husband’s hair. It took FOREVER, hours and hours through lunch, dinner and two movies. I picked “The Philadelphia Story” which he liked and he picked “House of 1000 Corpses”, which I liked, as much as one can like a movie like that. And so began an era.
He had dreads when I graduated college, when we moved to Chicago, when he proposed, when we got Oz, when I told him I was pregnant, when he graduated college. He had them in the Caribbean and Alaska and Europe and he had them when Evie was born. That hair has seen a lot of history. It was sad to see it go. But once that decision is made, it’s made. I’m so glad that when Evie started grabbing his hair that morning I grabbed the camera for an impromptu photo shoot.
A walk-in appointment and sixty minutes later it was done. It looks great! He was always handsome, but now it’s a new dimension of handsome 🙂
As for Evie, she was confused at first but once she heard his voice it was smile city!
