Crave Chicago: Little Independent

This past weekend I completed a photo shoot as part of the project I am working on with the Crave Company.  This amazing company puts out guide books to different cities that focus on and feature women owned businesses.  Not only that, but they are those hole in the wall, secret gems that you wish you knew about when finding yourself in a new city.   These are the places the locals go.  I am thrilled to be a part of the photography team that will be showcasing Chicago for the next guidebook.

I met with Lesley of Little Independent on Saturday morning at her bike shop, the charmingly vintage Roscoe Village Bikes.  I greeted a sleepy looking pup, “Hey Buddy.”  He perked right up and I learned his name actually is Buddy!  He followed us out in the softly lit backyard and watched us suspiciously as I took portraits.  He was not too suspicious to get in on the fun himself, though he seemed a bit wary of the camera.   I love the portrait that Lesley chose to be in the book, she could not be any cuter and her expression is perfect, she looks like the entrepeneur on the rise that she is!  It was great working with her and I cannot wait to see how her spread turns out in the book.

Showcasing the business itself presented a bit of a challenge as it doesn’t have a traditional storefront.  The idea behind Little Independent is amazing and everyone should definitely check it out.  They are partnered with local, independent stores and sell those shops’ sale merchandise in an online marketplace.  If there’s a store you love on Little Independent and you know you can’t make it in person for the sale, you can shop online and either have it shipped or pick it up in store at your convenience.  I really think this is brilliant as someone who never has the time to get to all the super cute boutiques I love in the city.  I approached the shoot by deciding to visit some of the shops in person and take photographs of their merchandise and sale sections to really showcase what Little Independent represents for Chicago.  I’d like to give a special shout out to the following stores who couldn’t have been more accommodating when I came in with my strange request.  They were all amazing and it took all of my will power to not just put my camera away and start shopping!  I will definitely be visiting again for that purpose, and I think all you locals should too.

Lesley Tweedie - Thanks for the photo shoot and the blog post! The photos look great. (Buddy approves.) Little Independent is still very new and we’re so happy you’re helping to spread the word about the unique stores and great sales we feature. Thank you!
